Room brings chat, communities and live TV streaming together. Described that way it sounds like a bundle, and bundles are usually a warning sign — three mediocre products stapled together rarely beat one good one.
The bet behind Room is that these are not three things. They are one behaviour that people currently split across three apps.
Watching is already social
Watch how people actually consume live content. They are in a group chat about it at the same time, on a different device, with a different set of people than the ones officially in the stream's comments. The conversation and the broadcast are one experience that the software has artificially separated.
Room's design starts from that observation. The room is the primary object — not the stream, not the thread. A room can be quiet and text-only, or it can have something playing in it. Those are states of the same container rather than different parts of the app.
The hard part was restraint
Every feature we considered could be justified on its own. Reactions, clips, polls, profiles, discovery feeds. Added together they produce an app where nothing is obvious and the first-run experience is a tour.
We kept asking a narrow question: does this make the room better, or does it make the app bigger? Most ideas made the app bigger. Those went on a list we have not come back to.
What is still open
Discovery is the honest weak point. A room is excellent once you are in one and worth very little if you cannot find one worth joining. That is the part of Room we are still actively rethinking, and it is more of a social design problem than a technical one.
